For some reason, this has become our go-to BBQ place in Wichita. I’m not entirely certain why. My best guess is that Bite Me BBQ is inoffensive and consistent. The service is ALWAYS excellent, the décor is interesting, and the food is ok. Parking on along St. Francis is always an adventure, so consider that in your plans.
I can’t say that Bite Me BBQ is the best BBQ in Wichita. It ranks below Pig In Pig Out, is probably equal to Hog Wild (which isn’t even the best BBQ in Hutchinson), and firmly above places like Jet, B&C Creations, and Two Brothers.
My usual order at a BBQ joint is a two meat sandwich. The thinking with this approach is that I get to sample at least two of the meat offerings and test the sides as well. For months, I’ve ordered a two meat (hot links and chopped brisket) sandwich with fries from Bite Me. On our last visit, the brisket had a multitude of fatty chunks in it. So, for this visit I ordered pulled pork and hot links:
My fellow diner, who appreciates rib meat to a much greater degree than I do, ordered the rib meat enchilada. This is a frequent special, but I don’t believe it is listed on the menu.
The actual BBQ is good. The pulled pork is tender and the hot links have an appropriate amount of smoky heat. Two types of sauces (hot and mild/whimpy) are available. These tomato-based sauces lean toward sweet and have been very consistent across all of our visits. Bite Me also offers a pickled vegetable condiment bar that features some interesting and spicy items.
I am not a fan of the fries. They remind me of Sphhanglez cup-o-fries, over-fried and bland.
The décor is comfortable and interesting, featuring local artists, a full bar, and TVs showing sporting events.
