We went to Blue Fin Sake Bar & Sushi several months ago and I just finally got around to writing about it. Take it how you want to take it, but I felt like Blue Fine Sake Bar & Sushi fell somewhere in the middle as far as sushi bars go and I did not feel like we had much to write about, but we did take pictures, so here we are.
With 3 Japanese restaurants within walking distance of each other in Old Town, I felt an over saturation of sushi in the area and it’s relatively a coin toss on where you end up on any given day. Maybe one day you feel like Wasabi Hinkaku because it’s approximately one block closer, or maybe you feel like Blue Fin Sake Bar & Sushi because it’s easier to find parking. Since Ninza owners recently took over management of Blue Fin Sake Bar & Sushi, their menus look fairly similar with your typical Japanese sushi bar fare.
On our visit, I was feeling a bit worn with regards to sushi, but I went with ika sansai (squid salad) anyway. Just like the beautiful interior of the recently renovated restaurant, the squid salad looked beautiful and tasted practically like every other squid salad I have ever had. We also had one of their specialty rolls, deep fried California roll with eel sauce, and it melded with the rest of the flavors that I expect out of a Japanese restaurant. Our local tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) expert said that the tonkatsu ranked in the middle of the tonkatsus in Wichita.
That being said, this is a sake bar, and we never got a chance to try their sake. So, while 3 Japanese restaurants do exist within walking distance of each other, only one touts itself as a sake bar, and we never got a chance to review it for its namesake, so keeping following us for when that happens. Until then, I feel like it falls somewhere in the middle of the abundant sushi spots that we have in Wichita.
