Tokyo Japanese Cuisine
Unpretentious and underrated Japanese spot

“What do you want to eat for lunch?” “I don’t know, what do you want to eat for lunch?” “Well, so-and-so is eating low carb, and so-and-so does not eat vegetables.” We always find ourselves gravitating towards Tokyo Japanese Cuisine for team lunches because they offer a wide range of easily modified dishes at a reasonable price. Even our most selective team members can find something that they will enjoy.

Located on Central and West in a standalone building, Tokyo Japanese Cuisine does not give away much of what it has to offer through its exterior appearance. Once inside, the silvery, ethereal stamped concrete floor and fluorescent aquarium hint at good things to come. Tokyo Japanese Cuisine seats several at its sushi bar and can host larger groups in booths and tables. On a busy lunch day, they typically staff well with one or two servers able to handle a busy restaurant. We typically dine with 6-8 people and never encounter a problem with slow or bad service.

Tokyo Japanese Cuisine offers your traditional Japanese American fare, with a large sushi and hibachi selection. I particularly enjoy their lunch special bento box because you can try a little bit of everything that they offer. This most recent visit, I ordered hibachi salmon that came with hibachi vegetables and fried rice. I admit that I was a little bit surprised at the presentation, you normally see a filet as opposed to a cross-section of salmon and I received the thinnest cross-section of salmon that I had ever seen. To my surprise, this presentation allowed the salmon to become crispier than typical for a better texture contrast to the hibachi vegetables and fried rice. Their fried rice does not include any bells and whistles (vegetables of any kind other than white onion), which might be enjoyable for those that do not prefer vegetables. Aside from the copious amount of teriyaki sauce, I enjoyed it and left with my hibachi craving satisfied. While I enjoy the theatrics of table front hibachi and fighting the Wichita crowds that come out of the woodwork on the weekends, I like the option of being able to find good, fast service hibachi.

Tokyo Japanese Cuisine offers tastier food than your average Japanese restaurant in Wichita, and especially at the price point. I love being able to grab a quick bite at Tokyo Japanese Cuisine to satisfy my Japanese food cravings. It tastes like it should take so much longer and cost so much more. I would call Tokyo Japanese Cuisine a hidden gem in plain sight.
