Ever get upset at a ballpark when none of the vendors offer a completely vegan dog? Yeah, me neither. However, one hot dog cart has addressed this non-concern and decided to do it in Wichita. Welcome to Wheat Street Dogs.
I followed Wheat Street Dogs in the news and gave them a couple months to find their balance before staking out the ICT Pop Up Park to await their arrival. A humble cart ran by a local couple, it seemed appropriate. I looked forward to trying what they had to offer.
They have a limited menu, but as expected for a hot dog cart. They include a plain dog that you dress yourself or a couple of other inspired dogs, including a banh mi dog and a chorizo dog. I decided to play it safe and went for a plain dog that I dressed with ketchup, brown mustard, relish, and sauerkraut.
You know, it’s a hot dog, so they generally do not look appealing in a picture, but I did try. I could have done without the copious amount of ketchup, but I added it against my better judgement, so that’s my own fault. The split top bun came nicely “buttered” (probably a vegan butter alternative with a vegan bun) and toasted, and the vegan dog itself had good flavor along with appropriate size and texture. Unlike the vegan dogs that you can buy from your local grocery store, these did not have a homogeneous texture, which I actually enjoyed. Vegan items generally cost more than non-vegan items, so I expected this to run me $7+, but at $5 for a plain dog, I felt like I received a fair portion for the price.
It’s hard to find a decent vegan dog in Wichita, and I am glad that someone decided to cater to this niche crowd. I’m rooting for Wheat Street Dogs.
